I love working as a graphic designer. When I was in my twenties I lived in Alberta and trained/worked as a graphic designer. I didn’t have a computer for a few years after that but once we got our first computer I started doing graphic design for myself an others. In 2015 my husband David and I started All Signs Graphics and Printing where my husband works as a sign writer and I work as a graphic designer. I have designed branding, logos, signage and other products for various businesses and companies in the valley and even out of town.
Some people are aware of my visual impairment and have asked me how I do graphic design when I have limited eyesight. Well, to start I am not color blind so seeing colors is not a problem for me… The wonderful thing about working on the computer is that most programs can be enlarged enough that I can use them. Also my apple computer has a twenty-seven inch monitor…
Even though I have had many different jobs from receptionist, bank teller, cocktail waitress and more, it has always been a challenge to get someone to hire me once they find out I am visually impaired even though I am qualified for the job. At times this has been very frustrating and discouraging for me. So, graphic design is the perfect work for me because I love working on the computer and doing my artwork and this allows me to combine two things that I enjoy so much. There have been several occasions when I have been able to incorporate my art work into my graphic design, giving it a more personal and hand crafted touch.
One of the things I love most is the challenge of bringing a customers idea to fruition. Nothing makes me happier than to see a customer excited to see their idea come to life. I also love it when a customer gives me total artistic freedom to create what I want for them.
For me, being a graphic designer is a very gratifying job. I enjoy it as much as I enjoy doing my personal art work. It is my dream job! I work with Corel Draw in Apple and Adobe Suite.
